The Basic Introduction to Automotive Radiators and its Working Principle

Radiators are cooling devices used in automobiles to prevent engines from overheating. They form the heart of the cooling system in all the vehicles. Primarily, they are responsible for maintaining the temperature of engines so that they can give an optimum performance. Automobile radiators, however, should not be misunderstood with home radiators which are used for the purpose of heating homes. Radiators are generally fabricated from copper and brass or aluminum and comprising of numbers of pipes put in a series through which coolant circulates. However, the material of radiator depends on its use and the different industrial radiator manufacturers.

The Need of Radiator: Engine Cooling System

The radiator is an invaluable part of an engine. An automobile engine burns the fuel and creates friction in the process of giving your vehicle the feed it needs. During this process, a large amount of heat is built up in the engine. The heat generated needs to be expelled in order to prevent its internal mechanics from the damage. Due to overheating, the pistons in the engine may seize up causing the engine to break down.

That is why the cooling system is needed to be kicked in the engines. The cooling system includes an exhaust system for escaping the excess heat, oil for lubrication, axial fan for forcing air, thermostat for transition of coolant between engines and radiators, water pump for pumping water, hoses, heater core, and radiator for maintaining the temperature by balancing the remaining heat that is not expelled from the exhaust system. As the engines reach a specific temperature the cooling system and most importantly the radiator does its work and help engines exhibit an optimum performance.

How does the Radiator Work?

The pumping system pumps the normal temperature coolant from the radiators towards the engine.

As the running engine produces a huge amount of heat, it is absorbed by the coolant that was pumped into the engine canals. Eventually, the temperature of the engine falls back to the standard temperature.  Now, this heated coolant is pushed back from the engine system to the radiator.

When the coolant reaches to the radiator, it circulates through a series of pipes in the radiator. The surrounding air absorbs the heat from the coolant circulating in the radiator pipes and brings the heated coolant back to the normal temperature.

This procedure keeps on repeating as long as the engine continues to run. In absence of radiator or in case of an issue with the radiator the function of the engine will cease and it will overheat.
